Bright field microscope is the most common type of microscope. Bright field researches are indispensable in a lot of professional spheres. This illumination technique is one of the simplest in light microscopy and hence the most popular. It also allows a lot of observation possibilities that’s why bright field microscopes are so popular.
The brightfield technique is widely used to study high-contrast, naturally pigmented (or stained using special dyes in order to enhance the contrast) microscope samples. Let’s learn a little bit more about this simple, yet very effective technique. A specimen that we are going to observe is placed on the stage of the microscope; the light source is located below the stage. Dense areas of the sample (stains, pigmentation) absorb the light, allowing us to see the specimen. This technique is commonly used to view stained tissue sections or, for example, cytological smear. This method doesn’t work for unstained live cells or tissue sections – the light easily passes through transparent or translucent objects without discerning their structure.
