For studying transparent samples, transmitted light microscopy is used. That means that light should travel from its source through the observed specimen and into the objective. As the specimen is placed on the stage, in order for the light to go thought the specimen, the light source should be located below the stage. That’s why all optical microscopes designed for observing transparent samples come with lower illumination. This type of microscope also was the first to appear as transmitted light microscopy was the first invented microscopy technique.
While being the most common and the most widespread microscopy technique, transmitted light microscopy still has one significant flaw, which is the lack of contrast when observing certain specimens. Fortunately, this problem can be solved by using simple techniques like sample staining or more elaborate methods such as phase contrast or polarizing microscopy. Luckily, amateur observers’ needs usually don’t require anything beyond sample staining and most of the time no contrast-enhancing techniques are needed.
In order to observe transparent sample in detail, it should be properly illuminated. All microscopes with lower illumination presented in this category provide the required level of illumination. As these microscopes utilize the same principle of producing resulting images, they use different types of light sources. The simplest type of illuminating the sample is using a mirror and natural light. While not being the most convenient type of illumination, it still features some advantages; for example, you don’t need a power source when working with such microscopes.

Halogen lamps are known for their soft and pleasant light, while LEDs are popular for their low power consumption.
